Review by Dave Belvins
Back in the early 90’s I found myself enamored with many of the female musicians such as PJ Harvey and Juliana Hatfield and I was really into all the female bands and female fronted bands such as L7, Babes In Toyland, Bikini Kill, Luscious Jackson. and Slant 6 to name a few. Why am I telling you this? Well it’s because the new EP by The Hissy Fits is a musical supernova of the aforementioned artists.
Lead vocalist Mary Jane Malice, bassist and backing vocalist Jenni Thomas, drummer and backing vocalist Logan Laurent, and lead guitarist Rex Bonney are a tour de force to be reckoned with as they deliver a driving sludge sound with pop sensibilities.
From the opening jangly riff of “Angel” one can tell immediately that this is going to be a fun record to hear and it does not disappoint. Mary Jane channels the late great Mia Zapata (The Gits) while she sings “she’s an angel in my eyes” during the songs chorus. The second track “He’s Right” is filled with crafty pop hooks in both the instrumentation and vocals, it is by far the most catchiest song on “No Way Out” and is guaranteed to be stuck in your head right after the first listen.
While the first half of the EP delves into punk rock tinged with indie-pop (think The Vaselines) or rather no wave sound, the second half brings on the sludge! “Last December” and “Crazy Jane” finds The Hissy Fits perfecting their slow and dirty tempo while the last track “Oblivion” follows the same formula for the first 1:20 of the song but then builds into a mighty crescendo that will leave you feeling like you’ve just been kicked in the teeth, which is awesome!
In closing “No Way Out” captures a lot of the raucous energy from The Hissy Fits live show and if you haven’t seen them yet do yourself a favor and head to one of their shows. I haven’t heard too many EPs where you can listen to them all the way through without skipping a song and play it over and over many times, for that alone I give this a 5 out 5 stars
